Life Enhancing Design
The Living Building Challenge is the world’s most ambitious standard for sustainable buildings.
It goes beyond reducing harm to demand that projects generate more energy than they use, capture and treat all water and actively improve their environment.
Buildings are measured across performance areas known as ‘Petals’ which ensure every aspect contributes to a regenerative future.
At its heart, the challenge asks one question… What does good look like? This is a framework that inspires us to create spaces that are not just sustainable, but truly life-enhancing.
Petals
The Living Building Challenge is the world’s most rigorous performance standard for sustainable buildings.
Unlike traditional certifications, it doesn’t just measure efficiency - it asks buildings to operate like living organisms, generating their own energy, capturing and treating water, and contributing positively to the health of people and the planet.
At its core, the Living Building Challenge is built around seven performance areas, known as Petals which include:
Energy
Buildings must produce more energy than they consume, relying only on renewable sources.
Water
100 percent of water needs are met by captured and treated rainwater.
Materials
Use safe, sustainable and ethically sourced materials, avoiding harmful chemicals.
Place
Protect and restore local ecosystems while integrating projects into their natural context.
Health and Happiness
Design spaces that support physical wellbeing, mental health, and human connection.
Equity
Ensure buildings and communities are inclusive, fair and accessible to all.
Beauty
Inspire through design that uplifts, educates and connects people to nature.
The Living Building Challenge sets the highest bar in regenerative design.
